Framsticks – added 8/17/2005

Framsticks is a three-dimensional life simulation project. Both mechanical structures (bodies) and control systems (brains) of creatures are modeled. It is possible to design various kinds of experiments, including simple optimization (by evolutionary algorithms), coevolution, open-ended and spontaneous evolution, distinct gene pools and populations, diverse genotype/phenotype mappings, and species/ecosystems modeling. Work on evolutionary computation, artificial intelligence, neural networks, biology, robotics and simulation, cognitive science, neuroscience, medicine, philosophy, virtual reality, graphics, and art.

Alice 3-D – added 8/30/2003

Alice is a 3D Interactive Graphics Programming Environment for Windows 95/98/NT built by the Stage 3 Research Group at Carnegie Mellon University. Alice is primarily a scripting and prototyping environment for 3D object behavior, not a 3D modeler; this makes Alice much more like LOGO than AutoCAD. By writing simple scripts, Alice users can control object appearance and behavior, and while the scripts are executing, objects respond to user input via mouse and keyboard. Alice reads many common 3D file formats including .DXF and .OBJ formats. Objects can be converted to Alice format from .3DS format using a special 3D Studio Max plug-in. The Alice core distribution includes a large library of textured models. The Alice plug-in does not allow authoring, but does allow viewing of any Alice world.

Maya Personal Learning Edition – added 1/14/2003

Maya 4 is the sixth major release of the world’s most acclaimed professional 3D software from Alias|Wavefront. Animation, Paint and Games tools are just part of what Maya Personal Learning Edition gives 3D graphics and animation students, current industry professionals, and those interested in breaking into the world of computer graphics (CG) an opportunity to explore all aspects of the award winning Maya Complete software in a personal, non-commercial capacity.

Anim8or – added 2/2/2005

Anim8or is a 3D modeling and character animation program which creates and modifies 3D models.

ppModeler – added 9/3/2004

ppModeler is a 3D modeling software, available for multiple platforms.

3D Canvas – added 11/16/2003

3D Canvas is a real-time 3D modeling and animation tool that incorporates a drag-and-drop approach. Complex models can be constructed from simple 3D primitives or created using 3D Canvas’ Object Building Tools.

Art of Illusion – added 2/22/2005

Art of Illusion is a open source 3D modelling and rendering studio. It is written entirely in Java, and should be usable on any Java Virtual Machine which is compatible with J2SE 1.4 or later.
