Houdini 3D Apprentice is the non-commercial apprentice edition of the same 3D imaging program used by the best animation professionals in the industry such as Electronic Arts, Sony Pictures Imageworks and Disney Feature Animation.

Terrain Texture Generator – added 2/23/2005

Terrain Texture Generator is a little tool that can create a unique terrain texture for a height map. It does this by blending a set of base textures according to the slope or height in the height map.

PlantStudio – added 3/12/2005

PlantStudio Botanical Illustration Software is a tool for creating 3D plant models and 2D illustrations. PlantStudio simulates herbaceous (non-woody) plants like wildflowers and cut flowers, vegetables, weeds, grasses, and herbs using a parameter-driven simulation of plant growth and structure. You can “grow” plants over their life cycles, producing lifelike images at any age.

XFIG – added 2002/11/22

Facility for Interactive Generation of figures under X11 is a menu-driven tool that lets users draw and manipulate objects interactively in a X window.

POV-RAY – added 9/5/2001

Program for creating sophisticated 3-D graphics. The Persistance of Vision Ray Tracer (POV-Ray) is an all-round excellent package, but there are two things that particularly make it stand out above the rest of the crowd. The source is distributed so you can compile it on virtually any platform. POV-Ray is based on David Buck’s original ray tracer, DKB-Trace and has been (and still is) developed and supported by a whole crowd of people on CompuServe Graphics Developers’ Forum.

Now3D is a 3D modelling program and a Real-Time and RayTracing program.

Blender – added 3/12/2005

Blender, is an open source software for 3D modeling, animation, rendering, post-production, interactive creation and playback. Available for Windows, Linux, Irix, Sun Solaris, FreeBSD or Mac OS X under the GNU Public License.
